I Listen to My YouTube Summaries Before I Watch Anything

Three channels, more videos than anyone has time for, and no way to tell which was worth it. Here is how one digest plus an audio version changed what I actually watch.

Headphones resting beside a phone displaying a written summary of a video

The three channels I actually care about post something most weeks. Each video runs somewhere between twenty and fifty minutes. Put together that is a few hours, and on a good week I was giving them about twenty minutes.

So the extras went into Watch Later, which is where good intentions go to die. By the time I opened that list it had gone stale, and I still had no idea which ones had been worth sitting down for. Thumbnails are built to make everything look essential. Titles are worse.

The part that actually changed

I turned all three into one newsletter. The YouTube Summaries add-on takes up to three channels, reads the full transcript of every new video, and sends back written summaries with the key takeaways and a one-tap link to watch, grouped by channel. No more guessing from a thumbnail what is inside a forty minute video.

That alone was useful. What turned it into a habit was adding Podcast Mode on top of it.

Two add-ons, one routine

Podcast Mode turns a newsletter into a private audio episode, with a Listen link at the top of the email. So the summary of everything that channel published now gets read to me while I am making coffee or driving to work. It costs me no sit-down reading time at all.

By the time I get where I am going, I know what every channel put out. Usually one video is worth the full watch. Sometimes none of them are, and that is a useful answer too. The watch links are sitting in the email whenever I want them.

Why the pair beats either half

A written summary still asks something of you: you have to stop and read it. Audio asks for nothing extra, because you were already commuting or cooking or walking the dog.

And the decision moves to the right place. I used to discover whether a video was worth it about ten minutes into the video. Now I know before I press play. That is the whole trick, and it is why running both add-ons on the same newsletter is worth more than either one on its own.

What it does, precisely

The details matter here, so it is worth being exact about them:

  • One YouTube newsletter follows up to three channels. You enter them separated by commas, as full URLs, @handles, channel IDs, or any mix.
  • Each channel contributes up to three videos per edition, grouped under its own heading, so a busy week can bring nine summaries in one email. Anything past three from a given channel becomes a "+ N more" link to that channel.
  • YouTube Summaries is $5.99 a month and Podcast Mode is $4.99 a month. Both are add-ons on a paid plan, and each covers one newsletter. Pricing lists the full set.
  • Podcast Mode is not limited to YouTube newsletters. It works on any newsletter, custom or prebuilt. The FAQ covers both add-ons in more detail.

The channel I stopped feeling behind on

The backlog was never really about time. It was about not knowing, in advance, which forty minutes deserved the forty minutes. A summary answers that question, and hearing the summary means answering it costs nothing at all.

I still watch the channel. I just watch the right third of it now, and I stopped feeling behind on the rest. If you want to see how the pieces fit together before committing, How It Works walks through setup and scheduling.

Quick answers

Can I listen to YouTube video summaries instead of reading them?

Yes. The YouTube Summaries add-on turns a channel into a written newsletter, and Podcast Mode turns that newsletter into a natural-sounding audio episode with a Listen link at the top of the email. You hear the summary of each new video, then tap the watch link only for the ones worth your time.

How many videos does one YouTube digest cover?

If a channel posts several videos between sends, NLFactory bundles up to three of them into a single digest edition, each with its own summary, key takeaways, and watch link. Anything beyond three appears as a link back to the channel so the edition stays readable.

What do YouTube Summaries and Podcast Mode cost together?

YouTube Summaries is $5.99 per month and Podcast Mode is $4.99 per month, and both are add-ons available on any paid plan. Each slot covers one newsletter, so running the pair on the same YouTube newsletter is $10.98 per month on top of your plan.
