My AI Newsletter Isn't About AI

I told a friend I read an AI newsletter every morning and he asked what I made of the latest model release. Wrong AI. The phrase means two opposite things, and the confusion costs people good newsletters.

A personalized AI newsletter is written by AI for you, not about artificial intelligence

I mentioned to a friend that I read an AI newsletter every morning. He immediately asked what I made of the latest model release. I had no idea. My AI newsletter that week had been about container gardening and a county zoning decision.

We were both using the phrase correctly. We meant opposite things by it.

One phrase, two products that share nothing

Say AI newsletter out loud and most people hear a publication about artificial intelligence. Model launches, funding rounds, the week in chatbots. Those are good newsletters and there are a lot of them, all mailing the same edition to everyone who subscribed.

The other meaning is a newsletter that AI writes, about whatever you asked for. The subject can be beekeeping. The subject can be your city's school board. The technology is the author, not the topic. Once you notice the ambiguity you start seeing it everywhere, and you start understanding why searching for one of them buries you in the other.

Nobody has this problem with older technology. A magazine is printed on a press and we do not call it a press magazine. A podcast is recorded with microphones and nobody calls it a microphone show. The tool stayed invisible because it got common enough to stop being interesting. AI has not reached that point yet, so it keeps ending up in the name of things it merely built.

The AI is the printing press, not the subject. Nobody ever called a magazine a paper-mill magazine.

What the AI is actually doing in mine

Every morning, on a schedule I set, four things happen before my coffee finishes:

  1. It searches the live web on my topic, so the edition reflects this week rather than whatever a model absorbed during training.
  2. It reads what came back and decides what is worth my four minutes.
  3. It writes the edition in plain language and lists the sources it pulled from, which is the part I check most often.
  4. It runs a fact-check pass against those live sources before anything reaches me.

That fourth step is the one I was most skeptical about. We publish the results of those checks as a live dataset, which felt like the only honest way to make the claim.

Why the mix-up costs you something real

If you want a newsletter about your own niche and you go looking with the obvious words, you land in a field of publications about machine learning. You conclude the thing you wanted does not exist. It does. It is filed under a phrase that already belongs to something else.

I watched this happen to a friend who wanted a weekly brief on youth soccer injury research for his kid's team. He gave up after an afternoon of results about neural networks. What he wanted took about two minutes to set up once he stopped searching for the technology and started describing the topic.

What mine is about instead

Mine is a personalized newsletter that happens to be written by AI. The topic is mine, the schedule is mine, and the technology stays where it belongs, in the background doing the reading. If you want to watch one get built around a topic rather than around a technology, How It Works covers it, and the Examples page will send you a free sample of any of them.

Quick answers

What is a personalized AI newsletter?

It is a newsletter written by AI about a topic you choose, rather than a publication covering artificial intelligence. The AI does the research and writing; you decide the subject and the schedule.

Does an AI newsletter have to be about AI?

No. The phrase covers two different things. One is a publication about artificial intelligence, mailed to everyone who subscribes. The other is a newsletter AI writes for you on any topic, from beekeeping to a local zoning docket.

How do I know the AI is not making things up?

Each edition searches the live web, lists the sources it pulled from, and runs a fact-check pass against those sources before delivery. The results of those checks are published as a live public dataset.
