Personalized or Custom? I Needed Both

I used personalized and custom interchangeably for a month and picked the wrong option twice. They mean different things, and the difference decides what you actually need.

The difference between a personalized newsletter and a custom newsletter

I spent a month using the words personalized and custom as though they were the same word with different numbers of syllables. Then I set up the wrong thing twice in a row and had to go back and think about it properly.

They are not synonyms. The gap between them is small to describe and decides what you actually need.

Personalized means it bends toward you

Something already exists, and it adapts. You pick which one you get, when it arrives, and in some cases it reads details you have given it. The Garden Planner is the clearest version I have used. It is a real newsletter with a name and a subject, and it changes what it tells me based on my growing zone. Two gardeners get genuinely different planting advice from the same newsletter on the same morning.

That covered most of what I wanted. It did not cover all of it.

Custom means it did not exist until you asked

The thing I could not find was a weekly brief on a narrow local subject. Not a category. One county, one kind of ruling. No publisher is ever going to start that newsletter, because the audience is roughly me and a handful of people I have never met.

Custom is where you describe that in plain English and a newsletter gets built around it. Nothing adapts, because there was nothing there before. This is the part I kept mislabeling, and it is the part that solved my actual problem.

Personalized means you are not reading somebody else's mail. Custom means the mail did not exist until you asked for it.

One question tells you which you need

Ask whether a reasonable publisher would ever make the thing you want.

  • Yes, probably. Gardening, horoscopes, recipes, trivia, local weather, film. Someone has made it, and a personalized version will shape it to you. Start there, because it takes about two minutes.
  • No, never. Your county's zoning docket, one supplier's price movements, the restoration scene for one model of car. That is custom, and it is the only way you will get it.

The mistake I made twice was answering that question with my heart instead of my head. Both times I wanted my topic to be special enough to need a custom build. Both times a ready-made newsletter with my details plugged in would have done the job in a fraction of the effort, and I would have had it running that afternoon instead of a week later.

I ended up with both, which I did not expect. Two ready-made ones I barely think about, and one custom brief that is the reason I signed up in the first place. Custom topics sit on the paid plans; the ready-made ones start free. The current ladder is on Pricing.

Where the two meet in practice

In daily use the distinction disappears, which is the point. Both arrive at the hour I picked, both cite their sources, and both stop the moment I say so. If you want the longer version of this comparison, it lives on the personalized newsletters page, and the Examples page will send a free sample of any ready-made one before you decide anything.

Quick answers

What is the difference between a personalized and a custom newsletter?

Personalized means an existing newsletter adapts to you: you pick which one, when it arrives, and it can use details from your account such as your growing zone. Custom means you describe a topic that does not exist yet and a newsletter gets built around it.

Which one do I need?

Ask whether a publisher would ever make the thing you want. If yes, such as gardening or recipes or local weather, a personalized ready-made newsletter covers it. If no, such as one county's zoning decisions, you need a custom topic.

Is a custom newsletter topic available on the free plan?

The ready-made newsletters start free. Fully custom topics, where you describe the subject yourself, are part of the paid plans. The current plan ladder is on the Pricing page.
